Here is a really nice original Potts & Hunt of London 1853 Enfield three band civil war musket. The association of these rifles with the Confederacy is well known and Potts & Hunt Enfields were carried by the South throughout the Civil War. The barrel is 39" and 55-1/4" over all with the stock. The correct London proof marks are dual 25s and are clearly legible denoting the .577 caliber. The stock has a nice dark tone and it’s been in war. The stock bears the name “Schrade†and a single “Aâ€. This Enfield has no Union military marks and it is not marked "Tower" or property marks of any kind. A British government rifle does not have the commercial marks of the London proof houses nor the double 25 bore size. Eventually some 70,000 muskets were sold to the Confederacy. For this reason Enfields unmarked by inspectors are highly considered to be Confederate. Samuel Colt sold guns to both the North and the South and was well connected with the firm of Potts & Hunt, from whom he obtained a variety of muskets, rifles and parts. I’m not an authority on these, just pulled a bunch of random info doing my searches. I purchased it at an auction and supposedly it was a family heirloom. I bought other amazing civil war items that were from the original family too. This will be a great addition to your collection.
